Ma
Raja Nabakrishna Deb had started the Durga Puja at Sovabazar in 1757, which is now over 250 years old. The grand Durga Puja was attended by East India Company sahibs as way for celebrating their victory in the Battle of Plassey. Raja Nabakrishna Deb observed Durga Puja in his newly constructed Shobhabazar Rajbari (king’s palace) in honor of Lord Clive. The famous Dancing Girls, Baaiji & Niki Baai were chosen to entertain Lord Clive. Henceforth, this Puja came to be known famous as a “Company Puja”. The Ramayana, one of the two great Indian epics, narrates that Lord Rama worshiped Devi Durga to seek her blessings for victory over Ravana. Controversies, myths, legends, and folklores all converge on the focal point of the skilled men at work – the clay idol makers or potters at Kumortuli in Kolkata, situated on the bank of the Hugli River.
