Howrah Bridge
Considered to be one of the longest cantilever bridges in the world, the British company, Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Company Ltd, secured the contract and a local organization called The Braithwaite Burn & Jessop Construction Company Limited was awarded the contract. Construction began in 1936, and it was completed in 1942, opening on the 3rd of February, 1943. The bridge was formed entirely by riveting and does not have any nuts or bolts.
GPO – General Post Office
The site where the GPO is located was actually the site of the first Fort William. An alley beside the post office was the site of the guardhouse that housed the infamous 1756 Black Hole of Calcutta incident. The General Post Office was designed in 1864 by Walter B. Grenville. The GPO is notable for its imposing high domed roof (rising over 220 feet) and tall Ionic-Corinthian pillars.
Shahid Minar
Known as the “Cloud-kissing Monument” by Mark Twain, the Shaheed Minar, formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument, is a memorial in Kolkata that was erected in 1828 to commemorate Major-general Sir David Ochterlony, the commander of the British East India Company. It commemorates his successful defense of Delhi against the Marathas in 1804
